Barr’s Rahn Dorsey Appointed Boston’s First Chief of Education

Our colleague Rahn Dorsey has been appointed by Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh to his cabinet as the City’s first chief of education.

I write to share news that can best be described as bittersweet: our colleague Rahn Dorsey has been appointed by Mayor Walsh to serve as chief of education for the City of Boston.

While this is a loss for us at Barr, we could not be more pleased for Rahn or more excited to have his leadership in this important role for the city. We will miss his ambassadorial skills that, in his five-plus years here, were constantly deployed on behalf of Barr in communities across the city. Those who have worked with Rahn know he brings not only considerable skills and experience, but also a deep commitment to improving educational outcomes and a thoughtful approach that is always respectful and inclusive of a multitude of perspectives.

We look forward to a new phase of partnership with Rahn in this vital new leadership role for Boston. You can read the City’s announcement of Rahn’s new appointment.

To ensure a smooth transition of his various responsibilities, Rahn plans to remain at Barr full time through Friday, September 19, and also to dedicate a few hours per week through the end of October. We will now be giving thought to how best to organize Barr’s work in education and evaluation going forward, and I will continue to share our plans in this space.
