On New Websites and Transparency

Why website redesigns are the first move, not the last, towards greater transparency.

Last week I had the opportunity to contribute to Glasspockets’ Transparency Talk blog. As we at Barr set out to design the Foundation’s new website, which we launched last month, we recognized that it was an initial step in our efforts to be more transparent and one part of a broader communications strategy.

In my piece I lay out four principles that guided us as we envisioned and designed the site, with transparency, accessibility, and engagement top of mind:

  • A website redesign must be integrated with a communications strategy.
  • It’s vital to engage colleagues across the organization.
  • There is much to learn from others.
  • The redesign is a beginning, not an end.

I invite you to read the full piece, “On New Websites and Transparency,” and to explore Barr’s Glasspockets profile, which addresses a range of transparency and accountability indicators. And, as always, I welcome your feedback.

Glasspockets is a Foundation Center initiative that champions philanthropic transparency in an online world. It provides the tools foundations need to understand the value of transparency, be more open in their communications, and help shed more light on how private organizations are serving the public good.
